How it works

Compress in three steps

  1. 1

Drop your JPG or JPEG photos in.

  2. 2

Graviton re-encodes them with MozJPEG at a quality you choose.

  3. 3

Compare before and after, then download.

Why MozJPEG?

MozJPEG is an improved JPEG encoder from Mozilla. It produces files about 10% smaller than standard encoders at the same quality, and every browser, app and printer still opens them.

Choosing a quality

Quality 75 is the sweet spot for photos: files shrink dramatically and the difference is hard to see. Use 85–90 for photos you will edit or print, and the "Exact file size" goal when a form asks for a maximum size.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between JPG and JPEG?

None. They are the same format; .jpg is just the shorter file extension.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Graviton converts and compresses inside your browser, so your images never leave your device. Nothing is sent while you compress. When you download, the browser sends only a one-way fingerprint of the image, so the download can be counted and approved. Graviton stores none of it.

What if my photo is already compressed?

If no setting can make it smaller, Graviton gives you the original file back unchanged rather than a bigger one.

Is it free?

Yes. Compressing and converting are free and unlimited, with no account needed. Downloading needs a free account, which includes 3 downloads a day with every format and setting. Pro removes the daily limit.
