How WebP compression works

Graviton decodes each WebP and encodes it again with libwebp, Google’s reference WebP encoder, at the quality you pick. Sharp color conversion keeps fine colored edges clean, and transparent areas keep their full quality.

Choosing a quality

Quality 75 suits most website images. Use 85–90 for product photos and artwork that must look their best, and the “Exact file size” goal when an upload form sets a limit. For logos and screenshots that must stay pixel-perfect, turn on “Lossless” under More options.

Frequently asked questions

Will my images stay WebP?

Yes. Each image keeps its format and its file name. To get a JPG or PNG instead, pick it under Format, or use WebP to JPG.

What if my WebP is already compressed?

WebPs saved from websites often are, and shrink by about a fifth at the default quality; high-quality exports often shrink by half. If no setting can make one smaller, Graviton gives you your original back, pixel for pixel, rather than a bigger file. Its location and camera details are still removed.

Can I compress animated WebPs?

Not yet. An animated WebP comes out as a still image of its first frame, so keep animated ones as they are. Animated GIFs keep every frame in the GIF compressor.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Graviton converts and compresses inside your browser, so your images never leave your device. Nothing is sent while you compress. When you download, the browser sends only a one-way fingerprint of the image, so the download can be counted and approved. Graviton stores none of it.

Is it free?

Yes. Compressing and converting are free and unlimited, with no account needed. Downloading needs a free account, which includes 3 downloads a day with every format and setting. Pro removes the daily limit.
