How it works
Compress in three steps
- 1
Drop in a photo taken against a plain white or off-white background.
- 2
Tap Crop and centre your head in the square. Graviton makes a 600 × 600 JPG between 54 and 240 KB.
- 3
Download it and upload it to the DS-160.
What the State Department asks for
A square colour JPEG at least 600 × 600 and at most 1200 × 1200 pixels, 240 KB or smaller, compressed no more than 20:1. At 600 × 600 that ratio means about 54 KB or more, so Graviton keeps the file between 54 and 240 KB.
What only you can check
The rules for the photo itself, such as a plain background, a neutral expression, no glasses and a recent picture, are up to you. Read the photo requirements on travel.state.gov before you take it.
Frequently asked questions
Why at least 54 KB?
The State Department limits compression to 20:1. A 600 × 600 colour photo is about 1,080 KB uncompressed, so 20:1 is about 54 KB. A smaller file can be rejected as over-compressed.
Can I make it bigger than 600 × 600?
Yes, up to 1200 × 1200. Tap Resize and pick Square (1080 × 1080) or type a size. Keep the file under 240 KB.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Graviton converts and compresses inside your browser, so your images never leave your device. Nothing is sent while you compress. When you download, the browser sends only a one-way fingerprint of the image, so the download can be counted and approved. Graviton stores none of it.
Is it free?
Yes. Compressing and converting are free and unlimited, with no account needed. Downloading needs a free account, which includes 3 downloads a day with every format and setting. Pro removes the daily limit.
