Why Format Conversion Matters

Different platforms, devices, and use cases demand different image formats. A PNG with transparency works perfectly for a logo on your website, but an e-commerce marketplace might require JPG. Social media platforms prefer specific formats for optimal display. And modern formats like WebP and AVIF can slash file sizes by 25-50% compared to traditional JPG and PNG — but not every browser supports them yet.

Manually converting images between formats typically means installing desktop software, navigating export dialogs, and hoping your transparency channels survive the process. Graviton handles all of this in your browser: upload any supported format, choose your target, adjust quality, and download the converted file — with transparency automatically preserved when the target format supports it.

Full Format Interoperability

Convert freely between JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, and GIF. Every combination is supported — go from legacy JPG to modern AVIF, or from PNG to WebP, all with a single click.

Transparency Preservation

When converting from PNG or WebP with transparency to another format that supports it (PNG, WebP, AVIF), alpha channels are preserved automatically. Converting to JPG applies a white background since JPG does not support transparency.

Modern Codec Support

WebP offers 25-35% smaller files than JPG at equivalent quality. AVIF pushes that even further with up to 50% savings. Graviton makes adopting these modern formats effortless.

Broad Browser Compatibility

WebP is supported by all modern browsers. AVIF support is growing rapidly across Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Graviton helps you serve the right format for your audience.

How Format Conversion Works

Convert any image to your target format in four steps.

1

Upload Your Image

Upload any JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, or GIF file up to 50MB. Drag and drop or use the file picker to get started.

2

Choose Target Format

Select your desired output format from the dropdown. Choose WebP or AVIF for maximum compression, PNG for transparency, or JPG for universal compatibility.

3

Adjust Quality

Use the quality slider to balance file size and visual fidelity. Lower values produce smaller files; higher values preserve more detail. Each format has its own optimal range.

4

Download Converted File

Your image is converted and compressed in one step. Download the result immediately — your original is discarded from memory right after processing.

Benefits of Format Conversion

Get the right format for every use case.

Modern Formats, Smaller Files

WebP and AVIF deliver dramatically smaller files than JPG and PNG at equivalent visual quality, saving bandwidth and improving load times.

Transparency Support

Alpha channels are preserved when converting between formats that support transparency (PNG, WebP, AVIF). No more lost transparency layers.

Broad Compatibility

Need JPG for an email template or PNG for a print file? Convert to the format your platform or workflow requires without installing any software.

Quality Control

Adjust output quality precisely with sliders and format-specific settings. You decide the balance between file size and visual fidelity.

No Software Needed

Everything runs in your browser. There is nothing to install, no desktop app to update, and no system requirements beyond a modern web browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

JPG does not support transparency. When you convert a PNG or WebP image with an alpha channel to JPG, Graviton composites the image onto a white background. The visual content is preserved, but transparent areas become white.

Graviton supports GIF as both an input and output format. When converting to or from GIF, the first frame is used for static format conversions. For animated GIF compression, upload your GIF and select GIF as the output format to optimize it while preserving animation.

Converting between lossy formats (like JPG to WebP) can introduce a small amount of additional compression artifacts. For the best results, start from the highest-quality source available. Converting from a lossy format to PNG (lossless) preserves the current quality without further loss.

WebP is supported by all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. AVIF has strong support in Chrome and Firefox, with Safari adding support in recent versions. Both formats are safe choices for most web audiences today.

Use JPG for photographs where file size matters and transparency is not needed. Use PNG when you need lossless quality or transparency. WebP is an excellent all-around choice with good compression and transparency support. AVIF offers the best compression ratios for modern browsers. GIF is best reserved for simple animations.
