Choosing a format
Which format should you save as?
Pick by where the image is going. Each card opens a converter with that format already chosen.
JPG: opens everywhere
The safe choice for photos you share, upload or print. Every app, editor and form accepts it. No transparency: transparent areas become white.
PNG: sharp edges and transparency
Best for screenshots, logos and graphics with text. It keeps transparency, and with Lossless on it keeps every pixel exactly. Photos as PNG are large.
WebP: smaller web images
Smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, with transparency, and supported by every modern browser. Some older apps and upload forms still reject it.
AVIF: the smallest files
Usually the smallest file at a given quality, with transparency. It takes longer to encode, and support outside web browsers is still patchy.
What changes
What happens to your image when you convert
Quality
Conversion and compression are one step. Saving as JPG, WebP or AVIF uses the quality you choose or an exact file size. Converter pages start on the Quality goal, at 75 or higher for photos, such as quality 85 for WebP to JPG.
Transparency
PNG, WebP and AVIF keep transparent and semi-transparent pixels. JPG can’t store them, so PNG to JPG fills transparent areas with white. Handing files to a client? See the settings for designers.
Animation
Animated GIFs keep every frame only while they stay GIFs. Converting one to another format keeps the first frame. Animated WebP and AVIF images keep only their first frame for now, whatever the format.
Metadata and colors
Every converted image is saved without EXIF, GPS and camera metadata unless you keep some, such as the date taken, and its colors are converted to sRGB, so it looks the same in every app. See privacy and security for what that means for your photos.
File names
Each file keeps its name with the new extension, so IMG_0042.heic becomes IMG_0042.jpg. Files in a ZIP keep their names the same way.

FAQ
Format conversion questions
Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?
Yes. Drop HEIC or HEIF files straight from your iPhone and save them as JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. Graviton can read HEIC but not write it, so choosing Same format saves HEIC photos as JPG.
Will my animated GIF stay animated?
Only if it stays a GIF. With Same format, Graviton re-encodes it as a GIF and keeps every frame. Converting a GIF to JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF keeps only the first frame. Animated WebP and AVIF images keep only their first frame in any format for now, and Graviton says so when you add one.
Is transparency kept when I convert?
PNG, WebP and AVIF keep transparency. JPG has none, so transparent areas become white.
Can I convert many images at once?
Yes. Drop up to 250 images and choose the output format once. Download them one by one or as a ZIP: 3 a day on Free, unlimited on Pro. Each file keeps its name with the new extension.
Does converting lose quality?
Converting to JPG, WebP or AVIF re-encodes the image at the quality you choose. Converting to PNG, or turning on Lossless for WebP or AVIF, keeps every pixel exactly, but it can’t restore detail an earlier JPG already lost.
